Cats & Tarot

Photograph shows side view of a cat wearing a winged helmet and breastplate armor in the role of the valkyrie Brünnhilde from the opera Der Ring des Niebelungen.

Cats. Their tiny paws, button noses, and murderously sharp teeth. So wonderful in every way. How they are unbothered, aloof, and misunderstood fuels stories of bad omens. Well, those from the middle ages. We now know that is just how they are.

Cat symbolism in tarot can range from curiosity to watchfulness, from magic to a singular focus. Some of our tarot kitties are mythical and wild. Using the Rider Waite as a basic standard, here is a list of cards with cats.

Cats & Tarot

Queen of Wands

She is cool, calm, and collected with her lovely protector at her feet. Cats protect and are aware of those we can not see. The nurturing stance of a lone black cat is watchful, and regal with her queen's blessing. Even on her throne and banner are lions, representing fire sign energy, usually Leo. She is attentive and ready for the next problem, handled with the grace of a leaping leopard.

In your reading, you will find this energy in a person, or in actions that need taken.

Two of Cups

You are not alone. With a cosmic blessing, a watchful winged loin head presides over two in mutual agreement. Some see this as the twin flame card, a meeting of two souls known to each other. Something so close to the divine here on earth is a healing power.

In your reading, do not rush to romance. Favorable friendships and business partnerships are just as likely. This card can also signify karmic ties. It could need to be resolved or be a catalyst to things  greater.

The Chariot

Victory! Dressed in duality, two Spinx rest in front of the chariot, poised for action. Taking each goal achieved as a win fuels this energy forward. It is still nice to hear it sometimes. The chariot here can also warn about keeping a singular focus and to keep a critical eye

In your reading, very much a Cancer vibe. Building understanding feverishly and getting lost juggling them. That water energy reminds us to go with the flow.

Strength

The lioness has nothing to fear from the lion. She is patient with her power and uses it with courage and discernment. She is independently fierce radiating Leo’s fire. Being in harmony with your feminine energy is needed if this card shows up.

In your reading, this can 100% represent influences over your inquiries life. A drive to push someone away may be prevalent. Relationships examined more intensly if it manifests this way.

Wheel of Fortune

Every mythical creature is hanging out here. We all spin around the wheel of life, and this card usually indicates luck this go round. Self-assured, magical, regal. With the Sphinx on the top, it makes me think our beloved cats know more than they let on.

In your reading, there is/was luck and favor. Remember, when luck runs out, you will occupy another spot on the wheel of life.

The World

In the final card of the Major Arcane, each fixed sign is represented, with the lion, Leo. A sense of accomplishment or signifying the near end of growth. The World card is renewal and rebirth, placing your goddess energy front and center. Recognizing your cycle could also be needed.

In your reading, it could signify an end as well. Realizations made and accepted.

Cats are present in our history, exalted to gods in some situations. In others, it got women burned at the stake. Poor black kitties get a bad rap and harmed because of superstitious tales that still last. (The same thing goes with puppies and people, unfortunately.) Hate has no place in any life, we will keep moving forward, showing the world the love you want to see.

Cats symbolize strength, courage, curiosity, and the feminine goddess in us all. Our little poof balls with the toe beans live in duality, attuned to their masculine and feminine energies. They are fearless when it comes to exploration, rebirth, and independence. Magical, watchful, and protective, they hold vigil over their humans, famously choosing the luckiest of us to protect.
